A Message From Your Seminar Leader
Almost twenty years ago I was deluged in my school-based OT practice with a surplus of kids struggling to print legibly. I tried every available program on the market and backed them up with an exhaustive list of core strengthening, in-hand manipulative, visual-perceptual, and developmentally-appropriate activities. Even after all these interventions, I discovered I could rarely graduate these students as neat printers.
This persistent lack of success prompted me to start experiment with variables that seemed more impactful. As it turned out, when I emphasized letter size, students caught on quickly. In fact, the special education students became the neatest printers in the school. At that point, I pushed in to regular education classrooms to see if the strategies translated. The change was dramatic. Teachers were ecstatic. “I’ll never teach another method again” was a frequent comment from those who tried this approach. Over the years, I continued the process of conceptualizing, formalizing and testing the first meta-analytic approach to teaching and remediating handwriting. This concept-driven approach empowers teachers and students with the knowledge to critique and score printing, and contains strategies that embed handwriting sensibility across the school curriculum, in all subjects. Equally compelling is that it requires no materials at all.
It has been my experience that there is no better way to insure carryover with students, follow-through with parents and collaboration between OTs and teachers. And now we have the research to prove it.
