A Message From Your Seminar Leader

Dear Colleague:

I have spent a significant part of 30 plus years in mathematics education working in schools and with students who represent a greatly diverse student population including ELL students. With much study, practical applications as a teacher, supervisor and mathematics coach, I have developed an extensive knowledge base of what works and what doesn’t work. I have focused this new seminar on the most effective ideas, strategies and activities that actually do work to help the ELL students.

With more emphasis on state standards that are more rigorous and have increased emphasis on communicating in verbal and written form, problem solving on many of the state assessments, national standardized tests, district benchmarks, and classroom tests, it is increasingly important that we are able to design and conduct instruction and assessment in the classroom that are focused on the needs of the ELL student population and their specific needs. Of course, the challenge facing us in the classroom is to accommodate the individual and collective needs and abilities of the student population served. We must ensure that classroom instruction for the ELL learner is focused and aligned to support a student’s understanding and knowledge of mathematics concepts, skills and ability to apply them in problem-solving situations but also support language acquisition.  Additionally, in order to provide for this specific population, the teacher must learn strategies that address the language of mathematics and incorporate these literacy strategies on a daily basis.

This seminar is designed to provide you with practical strategies and research-based ideas that target the teaching of the ELL students. My focus is to provide you with easy-to-use and classroom-tested activities that model effective language acquisition techniques, cooperative grouping techniques, effective use and design of individual and group formative assessments, and integration of teaching and learning strategies that address oral and written communication development.
