Dear Colleague:

It goes without saying that all teachers, parents and school staff strive to prepare their students for a productive and happy life. I am excited to share the latest research and early intervention strategies that I have found really work with our young students. Over the last several years, there has been a significant increase in the number of students with challenging behaviors and pervasive developmental disorders, including autism, Asperger’s Syndrome and PDDNOS (Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified), identified at earlier and earlier ages. Each of these present challenges in the areas of behavior, social skills and communication, which can create neurological stress and impact learning and living. Moreover, many of these children with an autism spectrum disorder have some type of sensory processing difference.

In spite of these challenges, parents and educators can celebrate that we now have greater access to proven instructional strategies, research on optimal conditions for the brain to process information, and supports and strategies to assist our students throughout the learning process. By taking full advantage of the most recent evidence-based information and resources, we can begin to face these challenges with increased confidence resulting in increased student success, no matter which setting you teach in.

In our day together, we will explore instructional and behavioral strategies to better meet students’ vast learning needs, ideas for dealing with specific student behaviors and data collection techniques to better show underlying causes of the struggles that our students with special needs experience.
