A Message From Your Seminar Leader
Dear Colleague:
For years, I dealt with daily issues in my OT practice related to lack of student motivation and engagement, poor decision-making and problem-solving skills, little interest in goal setting, and simply a general disinterest in learning. These are signs of learned helplessness. When children are not given opportunities to discover their interests or solve their own day-to-day problems, they are at risk for developing learned helplessness. I wondered to myself what could be done to fix the situation. As a dedicated school-based OT, I wanted answers. This led me to conduct research and develop expertise in learned helplessness, leading to the development of practical solutions.
I understand the importance of equipping our students with the tools they need to overcome these challenges, and I have them for you! Throughout my career, I've had the privilege of witnessing the transformative power of addressing learned helplessness in students. My approach, firmly rooted in self-determination theory, has yielded remarkable results – increasing children's motivation, engagement, and self-efficacy. We will delve into practical methods to reduce frustration, stress, and the dependence on external assistance. By the end of the seminar, you will have an array of practical strategies to help students regulate their own behavior, boost their self-perception, and confidently tackle even the most challenging learning objectives.
This one-day seminar for Occupational Therapists and Therapy Assistants promises to be an engaging experience as we explore dozens of practical solutions you can apply to your practice immediately. I want to leave you with doable ideas you can use to boost your students' confidence, motivation, achievement, and overall efficacy at school and in their daily lives.
I am delighted to invite you to join me as we dive deep into the crucial topic of "Learned Helplessness" in the realm of Occupational Therapy. I look forward to meeting you there!
