A Message From Your Seminar Leader
Dear Colleague:
Dyslexia can be defined as a language-based learning disability. We know that students with dyslexia have trouble with morphology, phonemic awareness (sound recognition), and phonological awareness (blending, segmenting, and manipulating sounds) which then impacts reading accuracy and fluency. Students may also struggle with reading comprehension, spelling and writing, which relies on morphosyntax development.
According to ASHA, through our Roles and Responsibilities of Speech-Language Pathologists in Schools, we are called to highlighting language and literacy as current research supports the interrelationships across the language processes of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
With our knowledge as speech-language pathologists of phonemic/phonological awareness and word retrieval, we can impact reading fluency and accuracy. With our knowledge in morphosyntax and metalinguistic skills, we can impact reading comprehension.
A few of the topics I will cover during our day together include:
- Characteristics of language areas that impact literacy development
- Powerful techniques to target morphology, phonology, syntax, semantics, retrieval and metalinguistic skills for literacy development
- Detailed strategies for comorbid diagnosis such as executive dysfunction
- Impact of speech disorders on literacy development
- Specific ways in which you can be a more effective and supportive member of a multitiered systems of support team and/or collaborate more effectively with classroom teachers
- And much, much more!
I am excited to share practical, timesaving ideas with you and to work with you to better serve students who struggle with literacy development. My goal is to use our time together in the most efficient manner. Therefore, the seminar day will be fast-paced and focused on specific ways to increase and enhance your effectiveness as an SLP working with this unique and exciting population, whether in a one-to-one situation or a whole classroom setting.
I promise, you will leave with an expanded toolkit of ideas and a fresh perspective on how to better serve children with dyslexia.
Sincerely,
Margo Kinzer Courter
P.S. This seminar is filled with quick and easy-to-implement ideas that you can use immediately!
