A Message From Your Seminar Leader
Dear Colleague:
I'll bet you entered this profession, teaching reading and writing, because you love the magic that happens when readers and writers meet. It's my guess that none of you entered this profession to prepare students to take standardized tests.
Yet, the stress and pressure that students and teachers alike feel at the mention of high-stakes tests is a reality that cannot be ignored. I hear teachers again and again ask, "How can I help students raise student test scores in a way that results in authentic, life-long learning?"
Trying to balance the tension between needing to prepare students for high stakes testing and wanting to develop in them a lasting love of reading and writing is one of the most difficult challenges we have as ELA teachers. It's a struggle that compelled me to get involved with the standardized testing process, to learn some ins and outs, behind the scenes of the testing so I could use creative ways to better prepare my students for success.
Using my experiences working behind the scenes on standardized tests and as an ELA teacher at the secondary level, I have spent the last several years developing strategies to find the balance in my writing classroom between preparing students to write for on-demand testing situations and, at the same time, preparing them for authentic, real-world writing tasks. My students' confidence, competence, and test scores have improved, and, even better, they have come to enjoy writing. I have developed a system for empowering students to improve their own writing, which has decreased my grading and given me more time to work one-on-one with my students, making my teaching more enjoyable and rewarding.
Consequently, I have developed this new seminar to share proven ways you can organize your instruction to fit more into class time, reduce your paper load and most importantly, significantly improve student writing. My goal is that you will return to your classroom with a wealth of practical strategies and tools for improving students' writing abilities and, in particular, their ability to write effectively on demand. I look forward to meeting you at the seminar. The day will be packed with exciting new practices, strategies and perspectives that will enable you to teach writing and empower students in engaging new ways.
Sincerely,
Suzanne Kail
