A Message From Your Seminar Leader
Dear Colleague:
As secondary math educators, getting our students authentically motivated and engaged in learning mathematics can be challenging! Are you tired of students asking, "When are we going to use this?" or "Will this be on the test?" Do your students fear making mistakes or being viewed as "dumb" in front of their peers if their answers are not correct? Have your teachers tried using handheld graphing calculators only to find students getting bogged down knowing which buttons to push or what syntax to use? What I find so exciting about the free Desmos platform is its power to greatly enhance our math instruction and help us address these and so many other challenges we face.
I've designed this train-the-trainer institute to focus on all the very best aspects of the Desmos platform based on my 32 years as a secondary math teacher. This won't be theoretical: I practice what I preach, and you'll experience Desmos from a math teacher's perspective. I'm excited to share how you can train teachers to greatly enhance their math instruction by making best use of FREE Desmos Activities and Calculator Tools. We'll engage in some "build-along" opportunities along the way and you'll receive my Desmos digital resource handbook, which is packed with practical resources and instructions.
Join me for two highly practical days! Get students to take a more active role in their math learning. Explore Desmos activities from the student perspective and how to maximize student learning from the teacher dashboard. Have your teachers easily build their own lessons and explore a host of pre-made activities they can immediately incorporate or quickly adapt. Learn how to engage students in math discussions using the Polygraph feature. Show teachers how to harness Desmos lessons to help students make and test conjectures, link multiple representations, draw connections between different concepts, take intellectual risks, learn from errors, use informal understanding to build formal conceptual understanding, and much more! Watch as students' confidence, interest and enthusiasm for learning math grows.
Whether you are brand new to Desmos, an experienced user or anywhere in between, this day is for you! If you have one or many laptops, Chromebooks, iPads, or computers, I want to show you how you can make the most of Desmos to help your teachers strengthen instruction and students' learning in mathematics.
Sincerely,
Andy Malbouef
P.S. I have personally experienced how Desmos can transform math learning into engaging and interactive experiences for students. I can't wait to show you how!
