A Message From Your Seminar Leader

Dear Colleague:

With all the curriculum and testing demands, does it seem like time for creativity and exploration gets lost? Join me for the day and learn how a maker mindset can bring active learning, creativity and exploration back into your classroom. You don’t need a 3-D printer and programmable robots to create. Discover how a makerspace can be developed on a shoestring budget with cardboard, milk cartons, straws, and make-it-yourself playdough. Explore inexpensive electrical circuit creation with gardening supplies and free online block-coding programs. See examples of makerspaces which have been integrated into a classroom, housed in a library or resource room, or used as an after-school club. Leave with a clear understanding of a successful makerspace teacher – a teacher who can support student creativity, pose the critical questions, and create alongside their students.

I have designed the seminar with time for hands-on practice using replicable projects. Following the seminar, the learning continues as you use the makerspace resource handbook I created, packed with lessons, tips, and integration strategies. You’ll also have access to my website where you’ll find links to tutorials and the most useful online resources.

Whether you are new to makerspaces, or an experienced makerspaces veteran, you will leave with new ideas and practical, classroom-tested lessons that you may share and customize for immediately use in your classroom. I invite you to come learn with me.

Sincerely,
Andy Mann

P.S. As an experienced teacher, I value the extra effort required for you to be out of the classroom, even for a day. I promise you that our day together will be well worth your “sub plans.” You will leave with a treasure chest of ideas, ready to use with your students. And be prepared for fun as we learn together.

Make Best Use of Your Time
Our goal is to make the best use of your time during the seminar while providing you with the greatest variety of practical applications for your classroom. To accomplish this goal, we use a large screen multimedia projection system to demonstrate specific applications, digital tools and online resources throughout the day rather, than individual devices. Though not a requirement, many attendees find it helpful to bring a fully charged Chromebook, laptop or iPad to use for hands-on practice, accessing the seminar links, and note taking. If you have both an iPad and a Chromebook/laptop, you should bring both. Your resource handbook, a copy of the slide presentation, and a specially created website will provide you with project ideas and direct links to the online resources to support additional hands-on exploration following the seminar.
