All too often, students turn in writing that is not up to what we know they are capable of doing. Many students are not used to doing any real revision, let alone the deep revision that most writing needs. The reason for the omission of this critical step in the writing process is that students don’t always understand exactly what is expected, and it seems like more hard work! Perhaps the most difficult part of this stage in the writing process is realizing that revision is not the same as editing or proofreading.

Real revision often involves deleting whole paragraphs, sentences and restructuring for clarity – a foreign process for students who are reticent to change even one word once it’s written on the page. Dear Colleague:

In my experience, the words revising, editing and proofreading have become synonymous terms for our students. For those who even attempt to tackle one of the steps assigned by their teacher, the exercise becomes nothing more than checking for spelling—and if we’re lucky—for glaring run-on and fragment errors as well. The good news is that it’s not because young writers refuse to go through the processes; rather it is because they don’t understand what is involved in each stage.

This seminar will not only more clearly define the terminology but also provide teachers with strategies that give students the opportunity to practice each tier of the scaffolding process inherent in producing exemplary papers. Once young writers experiment with these techniques, using specially designed skills sheets toengage them in the many methods of revision, they can then apply them to their own writing.

Revision, as we know being the most difficult, is an undertaking students would rather skip entirely since it could involve a total restructuring of their papers. However, when the rough draft writing is done in “chunks,” the revision process is less intimidating. Writers are not actually dealing with their papers as a “whole”—“re-seeing” the big picture—they are taking a “step back” to examine pieces of their work with the help of whole-class, partner or individual techniques.

Editing, too, will no longer be a mystery. Dozens of writing samples provide the practice students need in order to synthesize and apply the methods to their own works in progress. The proofreading section includes easy-to-implement lessons for every area of grammar/mechanics so that students have a quick, outlined reference at every stage. This section of the resource handbook comprises an entire grammar unit, complete with a comprehensive review.

The handbook also includes essays with questions specifically planned to develop student skills in each area that are essential in transforming their formative rough drafts into the final stages ready for summative evaluation.
