Practical Ideas and Strategies
Auditory processing disorders (APD) go undiagnosed in thousands of students each school year. Students who cannot listen well can have delayed language development and problems learning in school. Often these children are labeled as inattentive, having a behavior disorder or as being developmentally delayed, when in fact, they may be struggling as a result of an auditory processing disorder. By accurately identifying the root of the problem and working together to plan the most appropriate remediation and treatment plan, we can help these students to thrive in school.
In this outstanding seminar, Suzanne Foley, a recognized authority and expert on APD, will provide answers to commonly asked questions regarding what auditory processing disorders are and how they are most effectively treated in the classroom and in the therapy room. Suzanne will provide current therapeutic options useful for those who have very little experience with APD to those who have treated a number of children with auditory processing disorders.
Topics to be covered include a review of APD symptoms, screening and diagnosis of the disorder, and how to differentially diagnose APD and other developmental disorders. The goal of this seminar is for you to leave with a clear and concise understanding of the different professionals required in the evaluation and management of auditory processing disorders, the most current treatment options for the disorder and practical school, home-based and direct clinical interventions for treating auditory processing disorders.
Each participant will receive an extensive auditory processing disorder resource handbook that will include all of the techniques and therapy strategies discussed at the seminar.

A Message From Your Seminar Leader
Dear Colleague:
APD is a commonly misunderstood disorder among school-age children. Being one of the few audiologists who specializes in the evaluation and treatment of APD gives me a unique perspective on the disorder. There are many variables that can affect a child’s ability to listen and learn in the classroom. Because the symptoms of APD are similar to other developmental disorders such as attention deficit, language disorders, autism, and many others, determining the appropriate diagnosis and interventions for children can be challenging.
The evaluation and management of APD requires a multi-disciplinary approach. I will provide you with practical ideas on how to more effectively work together as a team; audiologist, Speech-Language Pathologist and classroom teacher to identify and work with students with APD. I will introduce you to the most current options available for the treatment and management of APD as well as specific ideas that are tailored to the unique environments of the classroom, treatment room and home. While we cannot help every student achieve at the same academic level, we can help every student work up to his or her full potential.
I have many goals for what you will receive in this seminar. The primary goal is that you will leave with an increased understanding of what APD actually is, and just as importantly, what it is not. I will provide you with what specifically is involved in the screening and evaluation of APD and what treatment options are most effective based on the screening results. I want to assure you that our day together will be as productive and valuable as possible. Therefore, I will spend the majority of time on practical and appropriate intervention strategies for children in all areas of their life.
I am excited to share my extensive experience in evaluating and treating children with APD in order for you to better understand the disorder and be able to use the tools learned in this program to help your students find greater success in the classroom and life.
I look forward to meeting you at the seminar!
Sincerely,
Suzanne M. Foley, M.S., CCC-A
