A Message From Your Seminar Leader

Dear Colleague:

As therapists, we offer a very unique perspective about how children learn. While our schools are increasing academic demands and limiting opportunities for movement, we understand that good sensory motor development is essential for children to learn and behave at their highest level of ability. Understanding sensory processing, and being able to convey this information to teachers in the form of easy-to-implement strategies, is critically important to help a student who may be struggling in school. Teachers and parents may “see” poor handwriting, distractibility or disruptive behaviors. However, it’s often the “unseen,” hidden challenges of poor sensory processing that are impacting a student’s success in the classroom.

My goal in our day together is to provide you with a fresh, new way of looking at how sensory motor development impacts school performance. I will share dozens of strategies, techniques and activities to improve student sensory processing. I will address the importance of a strong vestibular system and, more importantly, how to target it within the confines of a classroom, hallway or therapy room closet. We will explore how important a child’s visual processing is to learning. Together, we will answer the question, “Is it sensory, or is it behavior?” You will return to school the next day with innovative, new ideas to help the students on your caseload as well as with new approaches to improve your communication with teachers and parents. This is not a “sit and listen” seminar! You will have many opportunities to try new activities and collaborate with therapists who share the challenges and rewards of working with students in schools. My aim is that you will leave the seminar “fired up” and ready to return to your school with new ideas and a new energy to deliver the most effective therapy services to your students!

I am excited to share experiences and collaborate with you and I look forward to our day together!

Greg Santucci

P.S. As a practicing occupational therapist, I know just how valuable your time is; therefore, my focus will be on sharing practical strategies that work in today’s schools.
