A Message From Your Seminar Leader

Instruction in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language is a shared responsibility within the school.”

Dear Colleague:
We live in an age of assessment, ranging from the informal assessments you make from responses your students contribute during a class discussion to the mandated tests that are given by your school, district, and state. Writing acts as the cornerstone of much of our assessment process. And-I would argue-as well it should.

In today’s classrooms, our students, more than ever before, need  to be able to communicate with skill and precision in all their subjects. Writing, in our modern curriculum, is no longer the sole property of the language arts classroom. It has become a critical learning tool in all content areas. And as such, our classroom instruction is monitored and driven by how we assess how well our students are doing. Hence the need for easy and practical assessment tools and strategies. This seminar will give you strategies, methods, techniques and ready-to-use handouts to accomplish just that.

Along with learning how to assess your students without being submerged in tons of to-be-graded papers, you will learn the best strategies to use with the text-types specified by the Common Core State Standards. You will learn ways to have your students become more proficient, as well as confident, when using the narrative, informational/explanatory and persuasive writing.

Finally, during this fast-paced day, I will show you outstanding techniques to engage that less-than-motivated student(s) of yours who has tired of non-stop instruction with the seven sentence paragraph. I will share fun and motivating activities to use in all your classes. I have used, refined, and shared these ideas and activities over the years with my students and I guarantee you that your students will enjoy them also.

I welcome you to join other teachers for an exciting day of learning about methods and strategies that you can take back to your classrooms to reinvigorate your writing instruction. I look forward to our day together.
