A Message From Your Seminar Leader, Sheryl Lain

Dear Colleague:

We care so much about literacy for our students. But what a task we have! In a typical secondary school, one in four of our students can’t read well enough to find the main idea. Too many who go on to college have to take remedial reading. I know from experience as a literacy coach that we can turn around this state of affairs. I believe that all students deserve to read and write, to analyze and apply what they’ve learned; and I know we can help kids attain competence. But how can we help our schools reach all students and help them envision a brighter future? This seminar will provide the standards, the research and the practical applications for secondary schools and personnel who want to improve the literacy of their students.

In this seminar, I will share school-proven key elements of effective adolescent literacy programs as well as roles and responsibilities of literacy coaches/leaders. We will discuss the balancing act of improving literacy instruction and reforming the infrastructure of the school to support literacy instruction. I will model dozens of practical approaches to implement immediately in content classes including think-alouds, specific strategy instruction, writing tips, and backpack studies to improve student motivation and self-directed learning. All of these are student-tested, research-supported and are ready to adapt to your school.

I have been teaching for more than thirty years and a literacy coach for over ten. I am excited to share with you how to make literacy happen in your school. It’s wonderful to give all kids the gift of literacy to empower themselves and change their lives.

Sincerely,

Sheryl Lain

P.S. You will also receive the extensive resource handbook I designed specifically for this seminar.
