A Message From Your Seminar Leader
Dear Colleague:
I would like to take you on a mathematical journey starting with linear functions and ending with derivatives. Throughout this journey, you will discover dozens of strategies that will make a difference in your daily teaching of math, whether you teach algebra II or calculus. As a current practicing teacher, I fully understand the obstacles you face every day in your classrooms that make being creative and innovative in your daily lessons difficult and time consuming. I have discovered and used numerous successful strategies and activities that you can use immediately to increase student motivation and achievement in your own math classes. I will share ways for you to connect math to the real world so your students can see the relevancy of algebra and calculus. We will also take a look at how to make valuable connections using a graphing calculator.
We will look at realistic ways to move from “sage on the stage” to “guide on the side,” a journey I am currently traveling. By allowing students opportunities to work and learn in collaborative groups, I have found many more teachable moments by listening and asking the right question at the right time that makes students say “Ah-hah!” Though I still have many miles yet to travel on my journey in learning to become a better teacher, I enjoy sharing with others what I have learned thus far.
The strategies and activities I have planned for this seminar fit well with the NCTM Principles and Standards. Technology, problem solving, communication, assessment, differentiated instruction, and connections are key components that align with what we will discuss in the seminar.
