A Message From Your Seminar Leader

Dear Colleague:

Mark Twain said, “The person who does not read has no advantage over the person who cannot read.” I couldn’t agree more! But the question is, how do we motivate our students to read more? That’s what this seminar is all about! We will spend the day exploring how to engage and motivate our first through sixth grade readers.

Why is this so important? In this age of high-stakes testing our charge to increase reading achievement is a reality, not a choice. Did you know that “reading comprehension test scores are more influenced by the amount of a students’ engaged reading than any other single factor”? If engaged reading is our most powerful tool for increasing literacy, I think it is worth spending a day discovering ways to bring this type of reading into our grades 1-6 classrooms and libraries.

During our day together I will share teaching strategies that will empower you to engage and motivate all readers in your classroom. These strategies will help us accomplish both our short-term goal of helping students succeed on high-stakes tests and also our long-term goal of inspiring lifelong readers. These techniques have been so successful with my own students that I just can’t keep them to myself—I want to share them with you! Some of the topics we will explore include:
