A Message From Your Seminar Leader

Dear Colleague:

School librarians need expertise in no less than four areas – reading and literature, information literacy, educational technology, and collaboration – and if we can master them, we become the most indispensable staff members on campus. A university professor once told me that a school librarian should be like a shaman: an important leader in the community, someone who has valuable skills and someone who possesses great magic. I’m inclined to agree with him.

I love books, I love children and I love matching children to books. With so many books published every year, it can be overwhelming to know which ones are right for which readers. The adoption of state standards further complicates this process of selection and collection development. I read dozens and dozens of books every year, and it is my pleasure to share which ones I believe should be in our collections to support your state standards.

The adoption of state standards also coincides with a recession which adds another challenge for us — but also an opportunity. We have a mandate for a more rigorous curriculum, but we rarely have the financial resources to fully support it. This means that we must be more creative. We need to be very careful how we use our shrinking budgets, we need to continue to be instructional leaders and collaborative partners, and we need to rethink the programs and services that we can offer in the library.
