Dear Colleague:

If you have students who have disruptive and inattentive behaviors impeding their ability to focus and learn, you won’t want to miss this seminar. As adults, we constantly use our senses to pick up and process information that our brain then translates into meaning for both learning new information and responding to social cues.

Students, like us, depend on the ability to use sensory information to make meaning of their environment, assist in learning and applying new information, and create a foundation upon which to build. If the message from the senses to the brain is misinterpreted or ineffective, simple actions in everyday life become challenging and overwhelming.

In a classroom setting, the sensory‑impaired student can exhibit behaviors such as defiance, inattention, refusals, hyperactivity, and lack of motivation. These behaviors are puzzling and frustrating in our classrooms. This seminar will help you identify, understand and address the behavioral and learning challenges presented by students with sensory processing disorders. Students with “look‑alike” disorders of ADHD, Autism, Asperger’s, and Fetal Alcohol Syndrome are included in the range of behavioral and academic challenges addressed in this seminar.

We will spend the day creating a toolkit of strategies for working with these students. I will share with you best practices and how to implement practical, ready‑to‑use, research‑tested techniques. You will leave with dozens of activities, skill builders and adaptations that can be implemented immediately to help your sensory‑sensitive students regulate their own behavior.
