A Message From Your Seminar Leader

Dear Colleague:

I feel fortunate in my career as an educator that I have had the opportunity to work in a variety of roles to support students and teachers. By far though, my most rewarding experiences have been helping every student become a more successful reader.

Reading competency is critical for the academic success of all students, yet it is the largest stumbling block for many. Background knowledge, oral language, fluency, vocabulary, motivation, interest, an “I can” and “I want to” belief are all building blocks in comprehension that can truly raise the reading achievement of our students who struggle. A variety of practical reading strategies will be explored through active participation that will make a difference in our teaching practices. I will share effective reading strategies you can use right away!

During this unique seminar, you will have a day of collaborating, reflecting, discovering, learning, practicing, and connecting previous knowledge to fresh ideas. My goal is for you to leave this seminar with a plethora of strategies and dozens of ideas for future implementation in your classroom. I look forward to meeting you and sharing my knowledge and experiences during this valuable time together. I encourage you to attend in teams from your school, if at all possible – it will be a bonus for you and your colleagues to work together toward a common goal! However, whether you attend alone or with a team, we will work collaboratively to reach and teach each of our students, using the most effective instructional literacy practices.

I look forward to spending the day with you!

Denise M. Gudwin, PhD

P.S. You will also receive an extensive reading instruction resource handbook filled with numerous ideas and valuable, practical strategies that you can use immediately to assist you in helping increase the reading achievement of your struggling readers.
