Practical Ideas and Strategies

The eight Common Core Standards for mathematical practice are radically changing math curricula, instruction and assessments across the country for the better. This new paradigm offers both Standards of Content and Standards of Practice. In this dynamic, NEW seminar, award-winning math teacher and national presenter, Chris Shore, will share dozens of practical strategies and lesson ideas for helping all of your students meet or exceed the eight standards for Mathematical Practice.

Chris will share classroom-proven strategies for strengthening your students’ abstract and quantitative reasoning skills, enabling them to make better sense of math problems and persevere in solving them. You’ll also learn innovative ways to help your students look for and make greater use of mathematical structure, attend to precision and how to look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. Throughout the day, Chris will share tips on how you can better help your students strategically use the most appropriate tools and to think mathematically.

You’ll leave this seminar with a plethora of practical and proven strategies and lesson ideas for helping your students develop each of the eight standards of mathematical practice that you’ll be able use immediately in your own math classrooms.

Ten Key Benefits of Attending

  1. Help Your Students Meet the Eight Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice
The eight standards for mathematical practice are truly what the Common Core is all about for math educators and math students … Develop a deeper understanding of what they are and practical ways you can help your students meet or exceed these standards
  2. Lesson Ideas! Lesson Ideas! More Lesson Ideas!
New math lessons and activities that embrace the intent of the Common Core State Standards for mathematical practice that you can use immediately in your classroom … Acquire some of the most innovative and effective math lessons that you will ever find
  3. Improve Student Competency in Mathematics
Learn ways to help your math students learn both the content and how to think mathematically
  4. Increase Student Success on the New High-Stakes Tests
Most new state tests assess a student’s ability to think, not simply restate … See samples of these new assessment questions … Understand how they will impact your instruction and what you can do to increase your students’ success
  5. Teach Students with Dual Intensity
The Common Core expects students to have procedural fluency and conceptual understanding of mathematics … Here’s how to instill both simultaneously
  6. Engage Your Students with Content-Rich Activities
Utilize problems that pique student interest … Offer context and stories that are engaging and help students meet or exceed the standards for mathematical practice
  7. Develop Problem-Solving Abilities in Your Students
Demand less of your students’ time and more of their mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills … Here’s how
  8. Experience Effective Math Lessons that Go Beyond Note Taking
Learn firsthand how these innovative math lessons can significantly influence your students’ thinking … Learn how to facilitate the lessons in your own classroom by experiencing the activities for yourself
  9. Implement New Grading Policies and Testing Procedures that Encourage Students to Think
Convert your students from point chasers to mathematicians … Go beyond grades and unit credit and hold students accountable for demonstrating that they are able to think mathematically
  10. Receive an Extensive Common Core State Standards for Mathematical Practice Resource Handbook
Leave this seminar with a wealth of lesson plans, copy-ready masters and activities that you can immediately implement in your math classroom

A Message From Your Seminar Leader

Dear Colleague:

The Common Core Standards of mathematics are really all about the practices. While the Standards of Content have some noteworthy changes, the truly radical shift is in the Standards of Practice. These practices will demand math educators to teach students the skills to truly think mathematically.

Just as the Standards of mathematical content are what students are expected to know by the end of a school year, the Standards of mathematical practice are what they are expected to be able to do. As math educators, it is our new responsibility to instill these abilities in our students. It’s been my experience that traditional methods of instruction will not accomplish this for most of our students. We need the understanding of what these practices are calling for, and the resources and techniques to get the job done in the classroom.

During this fast-paced seminar, you will receive both. You will experience firsthand the very lessons that you will eventually implement in your math classroom. Offering you this student perspective will not only make for a very enjoyable seminar, but will allow you to more fully grasp how these lessons and principles of instruction can significantly influence the mathematical thinking of your students.

With the faith that they can learn it, and that we can teach it to them. I look forward to our experience together.

Sincerely,
Chris Shore

P.S. Again, the focus of our day together will be sharing practical ideas I know from experience will work in your math classroom.
