A Message From Your Seminar Leader

Dear Colleague:

A hallmark of student-centered learning is for learners to take ownership of their learning. Sounds simple, right? Unfortunately, years of previous schooling has removed students’ motivation to do so. In addition to that, we have many students in our world language classrooms who believe that they’re just “not good at” learning languages. Leveraging aspects of motivation, growth mindset, and the characteristics of persistence, effort, and grit, and embedding them into lesson and unit planning has a significant impact on learning in in the world language classroom. The impact of growth mindset in our students is enhanced when teachers link descriptive feedback on performances with growth mindset. We also know that cultivating growth-oriented mindsets in students can lead to resilience, persistence, intrinsic motivation, and increased confidence in abilities to use the target language. In this seminar, I will share the key concepts that positively impact learner proficiency growth and outline specific strategies connected to each concept. Working together, we will explore four aspects of motivation, connect these aspects to learner characteristics, and associate them to practical tips in lesson or unit design.

It is my goal that this seminar will bring you greater clarity and deeper understanding about the affective factors that can encourage our learners to partner with us in the journey as language learners. I will share research-based strategies, ideas, and structures that will help you transform your classroom environment and instruction in ways that will motivate and empower your students.
