Dear Colleague:

“Bullying” has been a part of schooling since there have been schools. In the American context, it has only really been since the Columbine High School rampage school shooting that educators have given bullying the targeted focus it truly deserves. The majority of states throughout the country have passed anti-bullying laws or are in the final stages of doing so. Dealing with bullying in schools can no longer be seen as an incidental irritant, something to deal with after managing the academic lives of students. When students are absent from school through disciplinary action, because they do not feel safe, or simply because they do not want to be a part of a culture that sports toxic peer relationships, they are not there to learn. Bullying must be understood and managed through the lens of overall school improvement.

All students and the adults who work with them are affected by bullying: perpetrators, targets and bystanders. High quality student academic and social outcomes are severely compromised when bullying exists, even at minimal levels. Individual state laws have helped draw focus on this important arena; it is now required to look at promising, best strategies and practices to intervene successfully and make schools more safe and individual student experiences as positive as possible; learning depends upon it. Legal requirements may be at the core of this need, but the moral requirements are even more compelling.

My passion for creating and maintaining “bully-free” and respectful schools has become my professional work over the past 30+ years. Fortunately, there are currently sound and concrete intervention strategies that provide sustainable improvement. Myths about who “bullies” are and who is affected by bullying historically have led to intervention strategies that have not helped educators improve the lives of students in schools. Fortunately, a wealth of research to determine best practices now exists, and there is a lot of it! Intervening successfully with bullies, targets and bystanders is based on understanding and implementing developmentally and gender-based appropriate intervention (and prevention) strategies.
