Seminar Schedule Overview

Program Schedule: 8:30 A.M. – 3:30 P.M. Daily

Monday & Tuesday (8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.)

Morning general session followed by separate breakout groups for grades K-2 and 3-5 to learn practical strategies for meeting the rigorous reading comprehension Common Core State Standards. These sessions are led by national trainers and reading experts, Denise Gudwin and Mary Beth Allen. Mary Beth is the featured trainer in the videos.
  • Learn the key components necessary for developing and advancing a successful instructional program that meets the rigorous reading comprehension Common Core State Standards
  • Discover best practices for using outstanding video clips to train others in specific strategies to help students meet the reading comprehension Common Core State Standards
  • Gain mastery of the range of reading comprehension skills and applications outlined in the Common Core State Standards and how you can train your staff to successfully implement them
  • Incorporate specific strategies to address the Common Core State Standards including reading closely and analytically to determine key ideas and details in both literature and informational text with appropriate text selection for each

  • Focus on reading instruction video footage ideal for training educators serving grades K-2 or 3-5
  • Discover tips unique for training teachers to enhance their reading instructional practices to meet the Common Core State Standards in grades K-2 or 3-5
Thursday (8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.)

  • Participants will deliver brief presentations on reading instructional practices using video clips and will receive feedback from small group facilitators
  • Practice presentations will provide the perfect opportunity to listen and interact to deepen understanding, familiarity and confidence with the material
  • Debriefing of presentations and feedback from the lead instructors will strengthen participants' training skills
  • Participants will leave with a training plan, model video clips for grades K-2 or 3-5 and confidence to implement a state-of-the-art reading training program that addresses the reading comprehension Common Core State Standards

Anne Beninghof Mary Beth Allen is an outstanding presenter with many years of experience in reading and writing instruction in grades K-5. Mary Beth shares research-based strategies that intentionally align with the Common Core State Standards for reading, along with specific interventions for problematic areas students experience when learning to read and reading to learn. She is the author of several books including the co-author of Guided Comprehension and is featured in the video series that will be used in this four-day institute. Mary Beth is known for her lively, fast-paced presentations that are filled with countless ideas, practical strategies and activities you can use immediately in your classroom and with your staff. 

Sonya Heineman Kunkel Denise Gudwin is an acclaimed teacher, author and outstanding nationally recognized presenter in the area of reading and the Common Core State Standards. Experienced as a classroom teacher, teacher trainer and as an administrator of professional development, Denise brings 34 years of experience working in literacy instruction for all students from the struggling to high achieving. Denise’s presentations are highly practical and filled with creative, innovative reading instructional strategies and assessments that align with the Common Core State Standards and can be adapted to meet the needs of your students and teachers.
